Winter Handicaps

The Winter Handicap Series is the longstanding ORR tradition first run in 1989. Anyone who has run with the Club in previous years will need no introduction to the delights but for newer runners, here is a summary. To provide a bit of fun and to make a change from the routine of running in groups around the streets during the winter months, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month we have a Handicap Time Trial where we all run the same route. The faster runners are held back on a carefully calibrated handicap system so that, in theory, everyone finishes together beck at the lamp post.

As times are taken, it provides a measure of progress, or lack thereof, over the winter training period. The basic route is 10k, starting at the lamp post, down to the main roundabout at the Rose & Crown, up to the Locksbottom traffic lights at Chapter One, down past Orpington Station to the War Memorial and back along Sevenoaks Road to finish at the lamp post.

For those who are not confident of completing 10k in about 50 mins there is a shorter route of just under 5 miles that cuts off the corners as an additional part of the handicapping system. For Beginners there is the less daunting 3 mile route that takes in Tubbenden Lane. Handicap times are based on past performance but any new runners should email John Mackay with their estimated 10k time.
